Matter Neuroscience

Joining the team in the early stages of development (pre-beta), I played a critical role in helping shape Matter's iOS app, website, and social media for their official launch - collaborating on product strategy, user experience and visual design language.

Challenges

Matter Neuroscience formulated a biomarker for happiness. Users can journal memories (images) and secondary memory anchors (music, people, location). By rating their emotions, they receive a Matter 'score' along with neurotransmitter activity in their brain. Matter's vision for the app was about education, fun, and increasing your neuroplasticity. During development, we had to stick rigidly to native iOS design patterns and SwiftUI limitations. The product had to delight users, without confusing them.

Process

During my time at Matter, I approached each feature with a consumer tech focus, using wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes to emphasise gamification, joy, and light-hearted education. While we had strong neuroscience insights, simplifying these concepts for users was essential. We maintained a clean visual style to let the science shine through, prioritising accessibility and usability.

Outcomes

Following the much-anticipated release of Matter on the App Store, the UI and UX was met with favourable user feedback. A futureproof design language allowed the app to expand and grow as the science develops. With a strong foundation in the MVP we built, Matter has a springboard to inspire users worldwide to increase their neuroplasticity.
