I helped create an immersive iOS experience to house world-class, face tracking AR technology for a team of veteran studio animators. I crafted interfaces, interactions and brand assets to reflect the team’s enduring commitment to capturing user’s imaginations.

AMGI Studios are an independent animation technology company comprising of tech and animation veterans from the likes of Pixar, Snapchat, Disney and Dreamworks. Their vision was a real-time animation platform that uses augmented reality to create full-body 3D characters that mimic the user’s expressions with face tracking. The experience had to be delightful, exciting, and accessible to anyone.

Create a visual language that was on brand and child-friendly.

As an early stage product, the Immi brand was in flux. To align with the brand values, I championed a simple, bright two-tone colour palette to allow the cinema-quality characters (provided by Immi) to pop on screen. Along with a clear sans-serif typeface, the palette aided in enhancing contrast for accessibility. I also redrew their logomark and icon set to give the experience a more playful feel.

With limited functionality, add memorable flair and style to interactions.

Due to the basic architecture of the app, there were few touchpoints to really communicate the brand. With a mindset of quality over quantity, I animated a whimsical transition for changing character (the most common interaction) based on a reference video. Giving physics to the component really gave the whole UI depth within the context of 3D characters. Exporting the transition as a Lottie JSON file meant development was easy, providing a smooth, scalable component for both iPad and iOS.

Create a UI for editing content that is satisfying and child-proof.

Crafting and sharing stories through multiple clips was critical to Immi’s product. Any complexity in the editing stage would limit the user’s imagination and lead to a drop in daily use. With this in mind, I created a barebones editor, with purposefully limited functionality to reduce complexity. Users could intuitively trim and reorder clips. To further improve the process, I spearheaded an initiative to pre-render clips in the background if a change was detected, cutting final render times.
